The Monarch Is “Endangered”

Due to declining populations, the iconic Monarch Butterfly was listed as “endangered” by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature in July 2022. You can help support Monarchs in your own backyard by planting their host plant, milkweed. This plant is critical to the survival of Monarchs, as the caterpillars feed exclusively on the leaves of milkweed.

The Best Berries for Birds

The berries that grow on native trees and shrubs provide food for wildlife in the fall and winter months when other food sources are scarce. Migratory songbirds find these berries especially valuable as they make their journey south. But are all berries created equal? Consider these trees and shrubs when looking for the best berries for birds.

Prairie Smoke

Prairie Smoke (Geum triflorum) is a short, mat-forming perennial that grows naturally in dry open woods, prairies, open slopes, and mountain meadows. Each stem usually produces 3 reddish-purple, bell-shaped flowers (although sometimes it can be 1 to 7) that hang upside down. Once fertilized, the flowers turn upward and plumes bearing seeds begin to grow, giving Prairie Smoke its smoky appearance. Prairie Smoke is often used as an ornamental groundcover in native gardens and in rock gardens. Its drought tolerance also makes it an ideal candidate for green roof plantings.

Why Use Direct
Native Plants?

Native plants contribute to ecological biodiversity, create sustainable wildlife habitat, and restore and replenish clean waterways.

use less water

Native plants have adapted to local growing conditions, and once established they can thrive on natural precipitation patterns, needing little supplemental irrigation.

VITAL HABITAT FOR Wildlife

By planting native plants instead of monoculture lawns, you can help provide the space, food, and shelter needed for a complete wildlife habitat.

PROTECT BIODIVERSITY

Native plants support a wide variety of native insects, which in turn support larger animals, creating an expansive food web of interconnected species.
