  • Description

Alternateleaf Dogwood (Cornus alternifolia) is an attractive small flowering tree that can grow 15-25′ high. It prefers medium, well-draining soil in part shade to full sun. Alternateleaf Dogwood is a popular landscaping tree due to its unique form. The horizontal branching pattern creates a distinctive layering effect that offers a pleasant contrast to the vertical lines of taller trees and architectural elements. The fragrant white flowers are small, and they bloom in attractive clustered cymes at the ends of the branches. In fall, the foliage turns reddish purple, and the blue-black fruit provides food for birds and small mammals. Alternateleaf Dogwood is a host plant for the Spring Azure Butterfly, pictured above.
