  • Description

American Smoketree (Cotinus obovatus) is a small flowering tree that can grow 20′ to 30′ tall and prefers medium, well-drained soil. This tree has many ornamental attributes. In the summer after it blooms, it has long, billowy, pink-purple hairs attached to the spent flower clusters which resemble smoke-like puffs, hence the common name Smoketree. Perhaps even more impressive is its fall color. Leaves of the American Smoketree can turn a range of colors in autumn, including yellow, orange, red, and reddish purple. Sometimes the same tree can display multiple colors! This tree attracts bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, and it provides cover for birds and small mammals. With its unique summer display, its beautiful fall foliage, and its wildlife value, American Smoketree makes a striking addition to any native garden!
