  • Description

Bald cypress (Taxodium distichum) is a long lived, deciduous conifer in the same family as the Redwood. This tree thrives down south in swamps and bayous, but does well in yards as well. It is known for having a flared trunk and knobby roots (called “knees”) mainly when grown close to water. Bald cypress can be used in a large rain garden, or as a specimen tree if there’s a moist area of the yard. With its needle-like foliage, and drooping branches it can be a very attractive addition to any landscape. When it reaches maturity it’s top provides a nesting site to bald eagles, ospreys, and herons. It’s seeds provide food to birds and mammals. It’s the larval host for the Bald Cypress Sphinx Moth.
