Beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) is a clump-forming perennial that grows 3-5′ tall and naturally occurs in prairies, fields, wood margins, and open woods. It can tolerate a wide range of soils, but avoid overly wet, poorly drained conditions when choosing a planting location. The white, tubular flowers of Beardtongue attract butterflies, hummingbirds, and native bees, making it an excellent addition to pollinator gardens. Additionally, it is a host plant for the Chalcedon Checkerspot (shown above). Beardtongue gets its name from the hairy appearance of its sterile stamen.
