  • Description

Bushy St. John’s Wort’s (Hypericum densiflorum) vibrant yellow blooms form in dense clusters from late-May to July (hence the botanical name densiflorum!). These blooms are especially attractive to bees, making this shrub a beautiful addition to pollinator gardens. In autumn, the foliage turns golden yellow, and the smooth, bronze bark provides striking winter interest. It prefers medium to wet soil but can be very adaptable. St. John’s Wort performs well in rain gardens, rock gardens, as a shrub border, and along banks and slopes.

    SPOT THE DIFFERENCE

Shrubby St. John’s Wort and Bushy St. John’s Wort are very similar shrubs with a few distinguishing features. Shrubby St. John’s Wort has a more open habit, the leaves are larger, and the flowers are also larger and less likely to bloom in clusters. While their native ranges do have some overlap, Bushy St. John’s Wort has a more eastern and southern coastal range while Shrubby St. John’s Wort has a range that extends into the Midwest.
