  • Description

Coastal Leucothoe (Leucothoe axillaris) is a short (2-4′) evergreen shrub that grows naturally in floodplains and coastal areas. The fragrant, showy, white flowers are bell shaped and grow in thick clusters on drooping spikes. These flowers are an excellent source of pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators. The leaves turn an attractive purplish-bronze in winter. Coastal Leucothoe is evergreen in its native range, so it’s a valuable source of wildlife cover in the winter. In the landscape, it is commonly used as a specimen shrub or a hedge.
