  • Description

While most people are familiar with the invasive Japanese honeysuckle commonly seen throughout the country, Coral Honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) is a mild-mannered honeysuckle native to the United States. It’s a much more well-behaved vine than its invasive counterpart, and for best results you’ll want to help train and secure it to whatever surface you’d like it to climb, such as a trellis, fence, or arbor. Place in full sun for the best show of flowers. When in bloom, it will be visited by hummingbirds as well as many different pollinators. This is the host plant for the beautiful Spring Azure butterfly, which is pictured above, and a host for the hummingbird moth. To avoid powdery mildew be sure to plant in well-drained soil, with good air circulation.
