  • Description

Flowering Dogwood (Cornus florida), also known as White Dogwood, is a small understory tree which typically grows about 15′-30′. In spring, these trees put on quite a display with their showy white flowers. By late summer they develop bright red fruit, which is loved by birds. Cornus florida makes for a wonderful specimen tree near homes. An interesting fact about this tree is the name dogwood actually comes from the fact that people used to make cooking skewers (called “dags” or “dogs”) out of its dense, hard wood. This is a host plant for the lovely Spring Azure butterfly, pictured above.
