  • Description

Northern Bayberry (Morella pensylvanica) is a densely branching semi-deciduous shrub with pleasantly fragrant foliage and wax covered berries. It can grow anywhere from 6′-10′ tall, and does very well in grouped plantings. It has a tolerance to salt, making it a great choice next to frequently salted roads. The berries provide food for birds, and their waxy coating is used to make bayberry candles and soaps. Bayberry is a host plant for the majestic Columbia Silkmoth (pictured above). The leaves of the plant are dried and used in cooking. Overall this plant is a unique, diverse addition to any landscape.
