  • Description

Ostrich fern (Matteucia struthiopteris) gets its name from its unusually tall height, a full-grown plant can reach up to five feet! A very attractive addition to any shady sections of yard, it will spread underground and form colonies. Does well in wet areas or near streams, and is suitable for rain gardens. Avoid windy areas, as their soil must not dry out. The spring fiddleheads of this species are known for being the tastiest of all the ferns, but must not be eaten raw. Typically people fry them up in a pan with butter. These amazing ferns can add some unique character to your landscape.
