  • Description

Keystone Value: The genus Quercus (Oak) supports over 500 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.

Due to its attractive pyramidal shape and the ease with which it transplants and grows, Pin Oak (Quercus palustris) has been a popular ornamental tree for years. It’s an excellent shade tree that prefers medium to wet acidic soil. In the fall the leaves put on a stunning display, changing from dark green to a deep scarlet. Like other oaks, the Pin Oak has excellent wildlife value. Not only is it a keystone species that hosts hundreds of caterpillars, but it also provides habitat and food for a variety of birds and mammals.
