Pipevine is a beautiful, deciduous vine capable of climbing 15-30 feet. It’s a vigorous plant easily grown on an arbor, trellis, or wall in proper conditions. It’s pleasing to the eye with it’s large heart-shaped leaves, and unusual flowers – resembling that which it derives it’s name from: Dutchman’s pipe. It’s dense foliage is capable of creating deep shade on whatever surface you allow it to climb – porches, verandas, pillars. When the time comes to control growth, it’s recommended to prune in late winter. This is an important host plant to the gorgeous pipevine swallowtail butterfly, which is pictured above.
