  • Description

Pipevine (Aristolochia macrophylla) is a beautiful, deciduous vine capable of climbing 15-30 feet. It’s a vigorous plant easily grown on an arbor, trellis, or wall in proper conditions. It’s pleasing to the eye with its large heart-shaped leaves and unusual flowers that resemble Dutch smoking pipes, hence the name! Its dense foliage is capable of creating deep shade on whatever surface you allow it to climb: porches, verandas, pillars, etc. When the time comes to control growth, it’s recommended to prune in late winter. This is an important host plant to the gorgeous pipevine swallowtail butterfly, which is pictured above.
