  • Description

Red Columbine (Aquilegia canadensis) is an erect perennial, growing up to 2 ft. tall, well-known for its drooping bell-shaped flowers. These flowers are shaped in a way that attracts certain bees, butterflies, hawk moths, tongued insects and hummingbirds. It is also the host plant for the Columbine Duskywing. This plant is also attractive to birds (finches and buntings) later in the year, as they eat the seeds. The foliage is interesting by itself as it is semi-evergreen. This plant is moderately deer resistant, and has high heat cold and drought tolerance, making it a superb addition to any garden! A fun fact about this plant is that supposedly Native American men rubbed the crushed seeds on their hands as a love charm, and were used to treat fevers, headaches, and other ailments.
