  • Description

Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum) is a dense, bushy shrub common to bogs and swampy lowland type areas. Clusters of white to very pale pink, fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers bloom in May after the emergence of the foliage. These flowers are stunning and are irresistible to hummingbirds and butterflies! They are not very appreciative of hot summer sun, so they are a bit happier in cooler dappled sun areas. They are tolerant of areas with somewhat poor drainage but do not like to sit in water for extended periods of time. However, they do not tolerate dry soil well. They are breathtaking as both a massed planting or a single specimen. They look good as shrub/mixed borders, as well as woodland/shade gardens. Also effective as a hedge. Another thing to note is it has a lovely variety of fall color, with attractive shades of yellow, orange and purple.
