  • Description

Sycamore (Platanus occidentalis) is a large deciduous tree, unique in the landscape for its irregular form and striking grey-white mottled bark. In the winter the Sycamore’s light grey bark stands out against the bare landscape surrounding it. It is commonly used for naturalized plantings or as a single specimen, and it can grow 75-100′ tall. Sycamore prefers medium to wet, well-draining soil, and it can tolerate a variety of inhospitable soil conditions, including low oxygen levels and high pH. The seeds feed birds and small mammals in winter, and older specimens form cavities which provide shelter for a variety of birds and mammals. Sycamore plays host to the Sycamore Tussock Moth, pictured above.
