  • Description

Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is a large, fast-growing, deciduous tree commonly used as a specimen or shade tree. The flowers that appear in spring are greenish-yellow, cup shaped, with an orange center. They have a strong resemblance to tulips, hence the common names Tulip Poplar or Tulip Tree. The flowers produce a large quantity of nectar and attract butterflies, bees, and other native pollinators. In fall, the leaves turn an attractive golden-yellow. Tulip Poplar is a popular nesting tree for birds, and it is the sole larval host for the Tuliptree Silkmoth (shown above).
