Keystone Value: The genus Solidago (Goldenrod) supports over 120 species of butterfly and moth caterpillars, providing food for a variety of birds and mammals.
Wrinkleleaf Goldenrod (Solidago rugosa) is a late-blooming, showy perennial which provides much needed nectar to pollinators, allowing them to sustain the winter months. Apart from its important uses for pollinators, it’s a beautiful addition to any native landscape with its brightly colored swooping flowers. It’s a very low maintenance and vigorously growing plant, and you could even consider dividing it every 2-3 years to control growth. Goldenrod has been associated with many medicinal uses, such as treating inflammation and joint pain. It often gets blamed for fall allergies, though the real culprit is ragweed! Solidago rugosa provides great color and texture to gardens at a time of year when there may otherwise not be much blooming.
