Description
Sassafras is an ornamental, small to medium sized deciduous tree. It’s known for having three different leaf shapes: ovate, mitten-shaped and tri-lobed. They have attractive clusters of green-yellow flowers, male and female being separate trees. Can be kept as a single-stem tree or allow root suckers to grow and form a large shrub-like appearance. Sassafras can be used to make teas, and a flavoring for root beer, but please do your research to know how to properly use the plant. It has beautiful yellow, orange, and red fall foliage. Sassafras is the larval host for many types of swallowtail butterflies, such as the Palamedes Swallowtail (pictured above).
