American Holly (Ilex opaca) is one of the few plants known by pretty much everyone, regardless of how green their thumb is. Its dense evergreen foliage offers shelter to birds and small mammals, and makes for a lovely Holiday decoration (Deck the halls with boughs of holly!). Its bright red berries aren’t edible for humans but are eaten by many species of birds – it’s an invaluable source of winter sustenance for them.

Holly can make for a great hedge, specimen tree, or even a group planting. It’s sure to bring joy to any winter landscape!
